The
much anticipated bridge spanning the Rio Caldera from
downtown Boquete to the fair grounds is slated to open
the last week of October, according to Marcelo Justavino, an
official with Total Construction, the builders of the new
bridge.
The Italian inspired design was engineered by Senora Yaritza Rodriguez,
who was also involved in the design of the Boquete Country
Club. The new two-lane bridge replaces the old single lane
bridge that stood for forty years, but which was deemed
unsafe and closed in November of last year. Soon after work
began to dismantle the old bridge and replace it at a cost
of $1.9 million dollars. The absence of the bridge was
blamed in part for attendance being down by 20,000 visitors
to this year's fair.
An official opening ceremony is planned but a date has
not yet been announced. The bridge is now open to pedestrian
traffic only.
Tragic accident in Boquete
Four people were killed and five injured in an accident that
occurred Sept 7th on the main street in
Boquete. It was the worst accident in Boquete's history.
Our condolences to the families involved.
Possibly to answer criticism of their
performance at the scene of the recent serious accident in
Boquete, emergency services held a demonstration in front of
the municipal building downtown. They carried out their
duties quickly and professionally, to the delight and
applause from the crowd.
