The Ngobe-Bugle People of Panama

The majority of the Ngob-Bugle live in small communities or villages. They live in "chozas" or huts made made of straw with dirt floors. In their farms, Ngobe men carry out an agriculture of subsistence based on slash and burn techniques and produce corn, cassava, bananas, peach palm, and some other fruits. During the coffee harvest season more than half of them migrate to work the plantations in the western part of the province.

The name Boquete translates into "valley of eternal spring". One of the strongest attractions to people escaping the bitter cold in the winter, yet not wanting to suffer the oppressive heat of many tropical countries, including many areas of Panama, flock to this area for its ideal year-round spring-like climate. Beyond the climate there are many other reasons to think Boquete.

Boquete is the best place for ecotourism today Panama has some of the world's most beautiful and biodiverse rainforests. As one indicator of biodiversity, Panama has more bird species than the US and Canada combined: 934. Boquete is the heart of a growing ecotourism industry.

Boquete has some of the best and most accessible places in the world for bird watching and nature observation. You can get up close and personal with the best of tropical nature just outside the city.

Boquete offers so much to do, from horseback riding to rock climbing. Take a four by four tour of the mountains or the rainforest with one of the experienced guides. Raft the white water with experienced white-water rafting companies. Take a coffee tour and see why our coffee is some of the best in the world.

Boquete is a great place for ethnotourism. The Ngobe-Bugle people live in accessible locations and are happy to share their life and culture with visitors. Many come to work seasonally in the coffee farms, but many live here permanently.
